SuperFinal Exam

As we end the course, and reflect upon materials covered since the midterm exam, answer one of the following questions in 4 single-spaced pages *or* answer both in 2 single-spaced pages each.  Please make sure answers are typed, spell-checked, grammar-checked, and draw upon specific concepts and readings.

1.  Use readings from either race, class, or gender to identify at least 3 key concepts from that unit and illustrate them using examples from graphic novels you’ve read for the course.  How are those 3 concepts defined and what examples illustrate them?

2.  How would you answer the question, “What can we learn from studying superheroes?”  Which top 3 articles help make the case that superhero comics have something important to teach us about American culture, identity, and values?

Our Final Exam period is Friday May 14, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  Any and all outstanding materials cannot be accepted after this time.

    something to appreciate

  2. I’m a little curious about the sudden change to single space. I don’t understand why we haven’t done that all semester. I’m also not sure if I can produce 4 single spaced pages in time for the deadline. Making it double spaced would be a lot more helpful.

    • Well, David, this isn’t a paper but rather a take-home exam. Technically, you could turn in one page or three pages or two sentences if you think that’d offer the *best* answer you can muster. In my estimation, two questions in four pages (or one answer in four pages) is a minimal requirement to estimate what you’ve found most educational across the entire course using 3 specific readings (that’d be an expectation for a two-hour sit-in final exam, without notes or anything BTW). If you’d find it “helpful” to double-space what amounts to a single-page answer, then by all means, roll the dice. Offer your BEST most comprehensive answer and, honestly, there’s a lot to talk about (especially when there are those who think superheroes suck). I’m grading the quality of your answer, NOT quantity, so feel free to turn in whatever you deem appropriate.

  3. speaking of sucking- here is something that offers testimony that people know how to prescribe good superhero movies. yeah its formulaic but its entertaining none-the-less.
